What is the difference between lager, stout and ale?

An ale is fermented with top fermenting yeast, typically fermented at warmer temps than lagers. Lagers are fermented with bottom fermented yeast, and fermented at lower temps, usually has a cleaner taste. Stouts are a style of beer that could be either lager or ale, usually mae with dark roasted malts.

They are all beers.
An ale is a beer brewed without hops (hops give the bitter flavor enjoyed by many beer drinkers)
Lager gets its name from the German ‘laager’ meaning to keep because it was traditionally brewed slowly at cold temperature (to develop flavor) over a longer time, using a bottom fermenting yeast.
A stout is made with toasted grains which gives itthe dark color.

In addition to the great info already given regarding fermenation and grain types, an lager is generally (but not always) more crisp tasting than an ale. Ale’s often have
more aftertaste. The Stout is heavier and more filling than other ales. There are also Porters, Wheat Beers, and
many other styles. Go to a microbrewery and order a sampler set to taste a variety of styles.

Ales and lagers are basically brewed the same, but it is the yeast used and the temperature at which it is fermented that makes the difference - ales are fermented warmer than lagers, and ale yeast ferments differently than lager yeast. As a result, ales tend to be more “fruity” and have more complex flavors than lagers, which are known for crisp, clean tastes.
And ales most definitely *are* brewed with hops.
